43rd Provincial Election (2024) Candidates
The Langley-Abbotsford electoral district is brand new and Alex is challenging to be its first MLA in 2024.
What really drives this passion for civic engagement is the desire to be an option on the ballot for those that otherwise would have no one to identify with; to be a voice for those that aren’t being heard.
Issues that he thinks should be priorities in B.C. in 2024:
1) Housing Affordability - If the Province wants more housing, the best way is to stop disincentivizing homebuilding. Whether it is taxes or layers-upon-layer of regulations, the government has done a poor job in providing an environment that encourages the rate of home construction that will finally bring the cost of housing in line, both for buyers and renters.
2) Healthcare - Instead of giving residents the right to obtain the best care possible, our government has fought against the heroes of medicine in the courts, while keeping thousands of nurses out of the workplace because of an out-dated vaccination requirement for far too long. Healthcare spending in B.C. is out of control and we have nothing to show for it. People are dying on waiting lists for surgeries, treatments, and specialist appointments.Radical change is needed, not just tweaks.
3) Taxation Reform - I want to see the personal tax exemption raised to $50,000 to ensure all of the lowest income earners keep more of their money. Taxes on energy, as well as Excise taxes, disproportionately affect the lowest earners and should be scrapped. Any remnants of the HST, like on private used car sales, needs to vanish. And the Property Transfer Tax should be phased out over an four-year period. And don't forget that the BCLP was the first party to advocate for Axing the Carbon Tax.
Alex moved to Langley nine years ago with his wife and son. You’ll find him volunteering all over town, and especially coaching youth ball and roller hockey. Five days a week he'll be at the Real Canadian Superstore, where he has been the Meat Department Manager since 2012. And though this former sports writer no longer is reporting on the local sports scene, you may run into Alex playing beer league hockey at a local rink. Finding the BC Libertarian Party has given him hope that we can make a real difference in reducing the size of government and taking back our individual freedoms and live as freely as we all deserve.
I am originally from northwest of Edmonton, Alberta and have lived all over Canada throughout my adult life including B.C. and Ontario.
I have had many different career paths that venture into the service, trades, sales, and now in the landscaping industry but one common thread in all my endeavours has been the entrepreneurial spirit. Entering the entrepreneurial world was what first piqued my interest into politics because, let’s be real here, taxes.
At the time, I did not look at our tax system as something that could be changed because it is what was “needed” to have the luxuries us Canadians have come to know and mostly take for granted. Roads, hospitals, schools and such have to be paid for somehow and our government has our best interests at heart, Right? However, after some time working my way through the world, I started to notice something. Why is everything getting worse? Infrastructure upgrades that had been proposed to take a few months to a year were taking three-to-five years; wait times at hospitals increasing to hours only to end with a five-minute conversation with an overworked doctor; mental institutions shutting down leading to people that needed help living on the streets; groceries becoming more expensive. Yet, the amount of money that residents continued to put into the system never decreased – only increased. I thought, there must be something wrong here.
Then, 2020 happened.
No matter how you feel about the policies that were put in place to combat Covid-19 there is one thing that we must contend with: we are currently living through the consequences of those policies, and we must find a way to correct the course. The printing of billions of dollars, the shutting down of small businesses, the restrictions to our freedoms have put the common British Colombian into a state of debt, insecurity, and overall anxiety of the future.
Even though I also feel this pain, and I emphasize the importance of being realistic about the present, I am also very optimistic about the future. This is why I joined the BC Libertarian Party. I do not believe that a central power can combat all the issues that are plaguing our province, but I do believe that people working together in free markets can and I am excited to share our platform for a better future.
Lewis first became a Libertarian in 1979 after watching a 10 part TV series by famous economist, Milton Friedman called “Free to Choose."
He first ran in 1988 for the federal Libertarian Party. Lewis believes greater personal and economic freedom increases overall prosperity.
I'm running in this election because we have experience a lot of things over the last four-and-a-half years that we should only have to read about in history books.
Our governments, at all levels, are not acting in the best-interests of the people; and our provincial government seems to be among the worst. Several pieces of legislation that have recently been passed here should be very concerning to anyone that takes time to understand them.
I am not willing to live in Clown World (A.K.A. post-truth world), so I'm hoping to help people begin to understand what the matrix is, and the nature of the psychological warfare that is being waged against us. The measures that our governments have taken over the last four-and-a-half years have killed more Canadians that all of the wars we have ever participated in...combined. It is time we held the people responsible for this accountable.
The matrix uses fear and hatred as weapons, so we need to counter with courage and love. I believe there is a better way, and we can create it together.
